What is a hydrostatic level sensor?
A hydrostatic level sensor is a submersible pressure sensor that has a pressure diaphragm. The inner side of the membrane is vented at atmospheric pressure through a vent tube in the cable and the outer side is in contact with the liquid and measures the static pressure of the liquid column above the transmitter. This static pressure is essentially caused by the weight of the fluid on the top of the transmitter and is used to calculate the fluid level.
The simplicity of use of a hydrostatic level sensor makes it the instrument of choice wherever the level needs to be measured, no matter if it is in a tank to the atmosphere, a container, a lake, a river or a reservoir. In most cases, it is suspended by the cable at the desired measurement level or simply immersed and allowed to flow to the bottom of the tank. Regardless of the structure of the tank, pond or natural geometry or if it has obstructions, ledges or a complex shape, a hydrostatic level sensor will always measure the pressure of the liquid unaffected by such disturbances.
Since the hydrostatic level sensor is usually a relative pressure sensor, it automatically compensates for changes in atmospheric pressure, so that the measured pressure represents only the liquid pressure caused by the specific density of the liquid and the vertical distance to the surface. . Therefore, the hydrostatic level sensor accurately measures the liquid level by calculating the distance between the measuring point and the surface level by the measured pressure.
A hydrostatic level sensor can be calibrated in a water column of measurement to allow standard gravity or local gravity. For a very high accuracy level control, often the temperature of the media can also be considered as taking into account the effects of temperature on the specific gravity.
The hydrostatic level sensor is a specialized sensor for level control, most commonly used in the water and wastewater industry and for all common oils and fuels. Its simple operation and its reliable and precise measuring technology make it one of the most commonly used level sensors.
